What to Do in Different Lockout Situations

Decatur LocksmithDo you always check to make sure you have your keys before locking doors? How often do you check to make sure you have them while you’re out and about on the road? If you have ever lost a key or had one stolen, you may know what it feels like to be locked out. It doesn’t matter where or what you have been locked out of, a lockout can be a very inconvenient situation. Not only can it be inconvenient but, it can also be a period of great stress.

No Keys? … Now What?

Although it is possible to have your keys when you get locked out, chances are that you won’t. whether they were stolen, you forgot them somewhere or they are completely lost, when you get locked out, there are a few things that you may want to do.

  • Get your spare keys

Getting locked out of some areas may be a bit easier to maneuver through when compared to others. For instance, if you are locked out of your home, it is possible that you have spare keys hidden somewhere on your property. On the other hand, if you get locked out of your car while you are on the road, it may not be possible for you to just lift a tire and a spare key will show up. But, it is always a good practice to keep spare keys nearby.

Whether it means that you give it to a friend or family member for safe keeping or you just hide it in a very inconspicuous location, that spare key can come in very useful down the line. Although having a spare key doesn’t necessarily mean automatic entrance to your property when you are locked out, it could save you the expense of calling a locksmith or getting new keys made because of the ones that were stolen or lost.

  • Check to see if there are open areas nearby

Sometimes we panic and jump to the conclusion that we are completely locked out of our home, car or even our business. Truth is, sometimes we locked ourselves out of the main entrance but there is some open door or window nearby. If the window is large enough, you may just be able to get inside safely without having to call for help. Before you start to panic or get yourself in avoidable expenses, check to make sure that there is absolutely no way for you to get pass those locked doors.

  • Call for help

If all your efforts aren’t successful, it may just mean that it is time for you to call for help. The urgency of the situation will also help to determine when you call for help. Just make sure that you are thinking clearly as you assess the urgency of your situation. If needs be, call a locksmith so you can get inside quickly. If your case is much more urgent, you may need to call for emergency services in your area.

Things You Should Avoid During a Lockout

If you are no stranger to lockouts, you may be able to easily cope with the flood of emotions that you tend to experience. But, if this is your very first lockout, you could be totally clueless about what to do. Plus, there are a flood of emotions that can overtake you. No matter how, when or why you are locked out, here are a few things that you should try very hard to avoid.

  • Don’t panic

This is much easier said than done. In fact, it is one of the things that most people do when they get locked out. Instead of panicking, take a few deep breaths and calm yourself. It will help you to think more clearly and come up with a good solution for your situation. If you are locked out because you forgot your keys somewhere, staying calm may just help you to remember where you last placed them.

  • Try not to overreact

Overreacting in a lockout can lead to many unwanted reactions to the situation. If you tend to cry when you get overwhelmed, you may end up crying. This can cause you to stay in the situation much longer than you ought to. Remember, it is very important that you have a clear head and you are able to think properly through your situation.

  • Don’t damage your property

In a state of panic, many people may overreact to a lockout and damage their property for what can end up being no reason. In many cases, getting the help you need from a locksmith can end up being much less expensive than breaking windows and doors to get inside. Before you kick that door down or break that window, think about the long run. Is that the best decision for you to make? If not, come up with a solution that will make more sense.
