Solutions for Removing A Key Stuck in Your Ignition

Decatur LocksmithDriving is a privilege. However much of a privilege it is, a motorist could still experience a problem from time to time. Vehicles are mechanical and because of this, you might experience problems every now and then. This is why routine maintenance is suggested. Just like we have to go in for routine physicals, it is just as important that we make sure we have our vehicles services regularly to avoid problems.

The problem is that you could have a key that looks fine but it isn’t. Our locksmiths are able to see more than the average motorist. However, most people don’t notice the slight bend in their key or the dust that has accumulated on the key. These are both things that may cause your key to stick in the ignition. If and when this happens to you, just rest assured that there are some things you can do to get your key out without ever having to contact a locksmith.

Check the Vehicle Gears – When the gear is any other position than PARK it will not enable you to remove your key from the ignition. You must make sure that the gear is in the PARK position.

Loosen the Key – In some cases it might be easy to remove the key simply by wiggling it back and forth. Don’t apply too much force or you could break off the key, which would only make the problem worse.

Check the Dashboard – Even if the gear indicates that it is in the PARK position it may not be. Also, check the dashboard to see if it also indicates that the gear is in the PARK position. If it isn’t then you’ll have to adjust your gear until it indicates that it is in the PARK position on both the dashboard and the gear.

If you have the vehicles in the OFF position here are some of the things to do to see if you can remove the key:

Check the Battery – In many cases a dead battery is the reason that you may be unable to remove your key from the ignition. By checking to see if the battery is dead, you’ll be able to quickly clear up the problem and get back on the road again. In fact, one of the first things that we will do when you contact us to determine why the key is stuck, the first thing we’ll do is check the battery. So rather than paying us to do it for you why not check it yourself and avoid the extra expense. The battery may need to be replaced or jumped before you can remove it from the ignition.

Loosening the Key – Just like we mentioned previously, it might be a good idea to gently loosen the key in the ignition by moving it back and forth. This can sometimes loosen it up enough so that the key just slides out.

Evaluate the Key Position – If you have a vehicle with an older cylinder then there is a chance that the key has entered the ignition incorrectly. It is easy for this to occur when you have a vehicle with an older cylinder.

We gladly offer you this helpful information so that you can get back to doing what you were doing. It is easy to become agitated and over react to the situation. However, with some information beforehand, you may be able to effectively handle the situation with a cool head. There are some motorists who would rather take care of the matter themselves, yet there are still some who would rather just call on the services of a locksmith to handle the job for them.
