Lock and Key Types

Decatur LocksmithThere are many key types, including the popular ones listed here…

Dimple Key: This uses “dimples” on the key, or pieces that match a set of pins in the lock.
Double Sided key: A double sided key means both sides are purposeful.

Skeleton key: This key can unlock numerous locks, so if you are a property manager, you might appreciate it because you can avoid keeping track of numerous keys.

Four-Sided key: A four-sided key is very challenging to copy. All sides need to work for the key to be able to unlock a door.

Transponder key: A transponder key is made to be a match for the vehicle it was created for. It prevents hotwiring.

Tubular key: A tumbler key and pin tumbler lock go together. You might see this used in a storage building.

Now we will go over some different locks…

You have likely heard of many of the different lock types, such as knob locks, lever handle locks, deadbolt locks, mortise locks, cam locks, euro profile cylinders, wall mounted locks, keyless locks, padlocks, and so on. But maybe you aren’t aware of the differences between them. Keep reading!
Knob lock: A knob lock can be locked from the inside and outside. You might see this kind of lock on a bathroom or bedroom door, or even a door that leads into a bonus room. It is easily manipulated, so it’s a great option for internal security or when used in combination with another lock.

Cam lock: A cam lock is a cylindrical lock. Medeco makes a high security cam lock you might want to look into.

Deadbolt: A deadbolt adds a security layer and can help to deter a break-in. There are several categories of deadbolts, to include single cylinder and keyless.

Child-Resistant lock: If you have a toddler at home, child-resistant locks might be for you. They can make it difficult for a child to gain access to a certain room or to leave your house.

Padlocks: A padlock is portable, and can be used for lockers, bikes and so on.

Mortise lock: A mortise lock is used on a door’s body. It can also go on a piece of furniture.

There are so many different lock and key types at your disposal – there is never a shortage of options when you are looking into security features. A locksmith can help you if you are unsure of the best lock type for you or if you have questions about different keys. Thanks for reading about the different types of keys and locks!
